Primary - there are 1 carbon bonded to another carbon
Secondary - there are 2 carbons bonded to another carbon
Tertiary - there are 3 carbons bonded to another carbon
Quaternary - there 4 carbons bonded to another carbon
Classifying Hydrogens
Primary - hydrogen is on a carbon atom bonded to one other carbon atom.
Secondary - hydrogen is on a carbon atom bonded to two other carbon atoms.
Tertiary - hydrogen is on a carbon atom bonded to three other carbon atoms.
